adventureland, adventureland

Adventureland Long Island is a small amusement park located in East Farmingdale, NY along a road called route 110. This location has made the park very popular for Long Islanders who want to have a fun time, especially for coaster enthusiasts on Long Island. Almost every kid across Long Island would visit the park at least once during the busy summer season as it is what they claim to be Long Islands only amusement park (even though Luna Park and the Historic Nunley’s Carousel on Museum Row. This has caused many to have nostalgic views towards many of the rides in the park. One of these rides is the classic haunted house. There have been many variations of this type of ride in the park with some being better than others. I’m the East Coaster Fan and today let’s explore the brief history of the Adventureland Haunted House.Ah the seventies. It was such a great decade. You had the Godfather come out, All in the Family, and Big Wheels. During this time Adventureland, or should I say 110 Adventureland was only an awkward teenager. It didn’t know what it wanted to be yet. That all changed on September 15th, 1977 when Willy Miller bought the park from original owner Alvin Cohen. Hey, that’s the same day Captain Planet and the Planeteers came out (play part of intro to captain planet). Does anyone remember that show? Willy Miller would own the park for 10 years and sell it to Tony Gentile and Peter Amoruso. The Gentile family still owns the park today. Fun Fact, these two people with a little help from Chip Cleary in 1991 would create another park in Long Island, only this time it would be a water park called do I dare say it…Splish Splash (play song) dang it, that always happens. However, the park that I dare not say the name of was sold in 2001 to Palace Entertainment, the same company who owns Kennywood and Lake Compounce. Going back to when Willy Miller purchased 110 Adventureland, he- (uh Mr. Coaster Fan, Miller changed the name of the park you know). Well yes random person he did change the name of the park. Some say it was a bold move. He removed the 110 from the name (Gasp) Its ok, its ok don’t freak out it’s not as bad as old mascot Albert Adventureland getting his own Facebook page. Now with the purchase of ADVENTURELAND, Miller could improve the park, make it better, and…you know what lets just add rides. And rides they added, ride after ride after ride. This was the time when the park received classics such as the merry go round, antique cars, looping star and the black hole…no not the black hole from Alton Towers, this Black Hole. What used to be a theater showing a movie turned into an indoor ride. Hmm, now where could this have happened before (Stitch’s Great Escape picture slides in). To be honest though, this ride was interesting. It was a Chance Trabant or as the GP say, that ride with many lighting and sound effects. From the description, it sounded very cool. However, there was still another major ride that he added, one that would change the face of Adventureland forever. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you…The Lost Continent (picture slides in of 1313 cemetery way but quickly changes to this ride). Now ironically, not a lot is known about this attraction. However, when the ride closed the track and ride vehicles stayed the same. But what attraction would replace it?Its time for…NAME, THAT, TUNE!!!!!! (audience applause) Hi, I’m your host The Wicker Man and today we are asking you, yes you to name a random song in just 5 seconds. Is it even possible? Let’s find out. Now let’s choose who will be playing today. (play clip of Bart Simpson saying, “how about those guys” and Krusty saying sure they’re clean). Alright players, use that comment section to put your answers, and don’t cheat by skipping ahead. Are you ready, too bad, its time to NAME, THAT, TUNE. (Play 3-8 seconds of the Munsters theme song). Alright, its time to guess, you get 10 seconds to make your guess starting, now (play kahoot). Alright players, its time to view a random guess to see if they were right. This one was sent in by some YouTube channel called Theme Park Worldwide. (show answer being Uma Thurman by Fallout Boy). Oh, I’m sorry, that is incorrect, although the sound of the guitar is very similar. How about another answer? This one is from The Legend, Clint Novak and Drew the Intern who all had the same answer. They said (slides in) the Munsters theme. That is…correct!!! Congratulations all three of you. You guys win a Mugman Mug. Just remember not to drink with the devil. Well, that’s all the time we have today. See you next time (roll fake credits until sudden stop).Wait, how at all does this relate to Adventureland haunted houses. Well, the Munsters (aka the other Halloween based family (show picture of the Addams Family)) would inspire their new ride. As you can tell, they have the same colors and the same style, although they would ruin that in a later refurbishment that made the ride look much creepier. But what about the most critical part of this ride, the name. In the show, the Munsters address was 1313 Mockingbird Lane. Since the park couldn’t license the name from CBS, they went with the name 1313 Cemetery Way. So, how was the ride. From the looks of it, the ride seemed to be very promising. It intimidated people and children from coming in, which a haunted house should do. I know it intimidated me when I was a kid. But what made it such a good ride? Many new scenes were added to the ride along with the addition of new characters. These included giant spider, a giant bat, a giant pterodactyl like creature, a giant skull (man, they love their giant props), the classic puking guy and even Frankenstein’s Monster. (show clip of young Frankenstein saying it’s frankensteeeen). But these were just minor props compared to what were arguably the most popular in the entire ride. These were the Haunted Tree, the Owl and King Kong. (Laughing guy in disbelief). This may sound odd, but they were the perfect combination. First, lets focus on the primary villain of the ride, The Haunted Tree and his companion the Owl (both voiced by Dennis Daniel who worked with many Long Island radio stations) were placed at the end of the ride replacing the giant bat. They both became known as the keeper of the haunted house. Both were animatronic figures. The tree could blink his eyes and move his arms while the Owl could move his head. The Haunted Tree and the Owl would have a conversation that you could hear in line that was specially made for this ride. It is now an iconic part of this attraction. (play clip of them talking). In addition to that amazing soundtrack, the “man with a chainsaw” was inside the house and its possible to see him in the window. Next was King Kong. Sometimes considered an alliance with the haunted tree, he had his own custom scene in the ride. The King Kong animatronic was put in a New York City Subway station with a sign next to him saying “You’ll Go Bananas! At Adventureland.” Even when the scene was removed in a renovation, the animatronic stayed due to its popularity. Overall, this ride became an Adventureland classic and proved a stable in the park for more than 20 years. So why did it close? Well, the most likely reason was probably age but there were other factors as well. Some believed that the ride was becoming less and less scary over the years. Isn’t that the whole job of haunted house in the first place. You can’t just have a haunted house that is creepy but has people laughing the entire time (shows picture of the haunted mansion at Disney) …point taken. During the 2008 season, a prop of a skeleton bicycling on a tight rope (yes, I’m aware that is was very strange) fell on a 5-year-old girl. She was hospitalized for a few days but was eventually released. The prop never returned. This even could have led to the closing. However, by that time, the Adventureland team had made up their mind and closed what many considered to be the best ride Adventureland would ever receive…well other than a roller coaster. However, this wasn’t the end for the Haunted Tree, Owl, and King Kong. The Haunted Tree and Owl would be outside of the new Haunted House but not function. He would just be a motionless prop. Hopefully he won’t get mad about that. King Kong on the other hand would be put onto of the Adventureland rock climbing wall. Yes, their used to be a rock climbing wall. But when that disappeared, so did the also no functioning animatronic. So, what could possibly replace such a beloved attraction? As long as it’s not a carnival ride from Germany, I’ll be… (play dramatic SpongeBob music) fine. So, in 2010, the Geister-Rikscha (have trouble pronouncing it then just give up and type it into Google Translate) the Ghost Rickshaws, a Mack Rides Ghost Train was added. But wait, the ride isn’t big enough for that entire space. That means we can add another much-needed attraction. A true drop…or you can add a mini Sky Trail course that will only be open for 3 years that’s fine. So, what did people think of this ride? (play clip of ride) Many believed the ride was nowhere near as scary as the previous haunted house was. It just lacked the charm the original had in the park. Let’s say you’re riding the now defunct Hurricane and see 1313 cemetery way (play that part of POV). Now let’s see it with the ghost house (same clip but with ghost house). You see what I mean? To be fair though, this remained as one of my favorite rides in the park. It was a nice ride to go on during a hot summer day and was different from of the rest of the mostly kid friendly park. However, one unique part of the Ghost House was its new ride vehicles. You were now being pulled by a man…who would eventually be under a cloth of some sort. Maybe he was starting to feel hot too. But fans of the old ride were still upset? Little did they know something big would be happening in 2013 to the ride. When you think of your local Cedar Fair or Six Flags Parks during the months of September and October, Halloween Haunt and Fright Fest quickly come to mind. The only event like this on Long Island is at small park called Bayville Adventure Park (play commercial for Bayville Scream Park). Adventureland on the other hand had a much different type of event called Pumpkin Park, which still exists today. It’s a time where smaller children can pick pumpkins…even though a real pumpkin farm is about 5 minutes away, Trick or Treat and Dress in their favorite costumes. However, in 2013, Adventureland wanted to become a member of this game. Their event would be called Nightmare on the Midway. They would feature 5 main attractions; Slappy’s Sadistic Circusland using the parks Kiddie Land area, Zombie Asylum using the bumper cars, Evil Express using the train ride, the Haunted Graveyard using the Antique Cars and lastly…The return of 1313 Cemetery Way located inside the Ghost House. But Mr. East Coaster Fan, didn’t they scrap the ride? This last attraction would be a retheme of the Ghost House with brand new scenes along with a spookier exterior look. Overall, it was a much needed changed to the ride. Another thing a haunt event usually has is a mascot. Six Flags has Dr. Fright and Cedar Fair has the Overlord. After just coming off their 50th anniversary last year, the park would continue to look back at their history and focus the event on one of the most iconic characters in the park, The Haunted Tree. The park promised the tree would be fixed, move again, and speak his original 1313 cemetery way dialogue. The Owl however would stay inanimate. Even though the tree remained outside, he moved just like he used to in the good ol days, until he received a nasty nose injury. The 8th wonder of the world would also return and be fixed, Kong would be trapped with a metal gate. This event seemed to be very promising, but never returned after that one year which is kind of sad. I thought it was a great idea. Anyway, after the event was over, King Kong would leave once again and make random appearances in the park in the year to come. Today though, there is still a different statue in the park in remembrance of the beast. The Haunted Tree however remained in the park until 2015, when it was removed to make way for the entrance of the ride and never returned. So, when you are going to ride Turbulence, made a tribute to the Haunted tree that used to be in the same spot. 2015 was also the year Ghost House would become Dr. Evils Famous Haunted House, but not a lot changed. The ride would still be referred to as the Ghost House for the rest of its existence, even on the park website. It was honestly a lack luster excuse to bring life back to the ride…even though the ride is about the dead and other horror related concepts. Finally, on October 10th, Screamscape reported that the Ghost House would be replaced by a ride called the Haunted Mansion, later renamed to Mystery Mansion. So, like the season pass holder I was, I tried a ride during the last day of operation. This is what happened (Show video). It seemed like I was a little too late, but was I upset? Not really? The new haunted house looks to be promising, even though it’s another carnival ride. I mean look at the trains for the ride, I bet you’ve never seen something like that before. And with that, we must wait for the future. I hope that the ride will be successful just like the other two haunted houses. And who knows, maybe the Haunted Tree and King Kong will make their grand return. We’ll just have to wait and see when the ride opens. Lastly before this video ends, I want to announce that I will be at Adventureland opening day on March 24th. Hopefully, the ride will be open by then. Other than that, I hope you enjoyed the video and I’ll see you guys next time. Bye (credits with Uma Thurman).
